Caption Speed & Timing Checker

Captions that flash past too fast are the first thing viewers skip. Paste or upload your SRT or VTT file and this free checker measures every cue in characters per second, flags cues that are too short, too long, too wide or overlapping, and gives the file a score you can fix against before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reading speed for captions?

Most guidelines aim for 17 characters per second or fewer. Above 21 characters per second, most viewers cannot read the cue in time.

Does my caption file get uploaded?

No. The check runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and no account is needed.

Why does a frame gap matter?

A gap shorter than two frames makes captions blink. Leave at least two frames between cues so the eye registers each change.
